
Ancestry vs FamilySearch: Which Is Better for Your Research?
Compare Ancestry and FamilySearch by cost, record access, tree control, collaboration, hints, images, and data portability.
Choose FamilySearch if free access and collaborative research are your priorities. Choose Ancestry if its paid record collections, private-tree control, hints, DNA ecosystem, and familiar interface match your regions and workflow. Many researchers use both: FamilySearch for free records and shared profiles, Ancestry for licensed collections and a separately managed tree.

Cost
FamilySearch states that its accounts and core genealogy services are free and that it does not offer subscriptions. Some record images are restricted by the record owner to FamilySearch centres, affiliates, or particular users, and links can lead to paid partner sites.
Ancestry offers paid memberships whose included collections vary by plan and market. Free accounts and trial or guest access can cover limited actions, but broad record viewing generally depends on the relevant membership. Check renewal term, cancellation rules, currency, and whether DNA services or newspaper partners are separate.
Historical records
Neither site is simply “bigger” for every researcher. Compare the collections that match your ancestors’ places, dates, religions, and record types. Search the catalogue, read coverage notes, and confirm whether a result includes an original image, transcript, or index.
FamilySearch’s partnerships can provide free access to major collections, sometimes with image restrictions. Ancestry licenses and digitises many collections with convenient indexing and image viewers. The same underlying record may appear on both with different indexes or access conditions.
Tree model and control
FamilySearch’s principal Family Tree is collaborative: contributors generally work on shared profiles for deceased people. This reduces duplicated public profiles and can pool sources, but another contributor may change data. Living people are kept in private spaces.
Ancestry trees are managed by their owners and can be private or public under current settings. Owners invite editors or guests and decide whether to accept hints. This gives clearer project control but also produces many separate trees containing the same ancestors.

Hints and matching
Both services suggest records and tree connections. Hints save time but are not conclusions. Open the source image, compare identity details, and record why it belongs to the person. A hint copied through many trees can amplify one original error.
Ancestry’s large user-tree and DNA environment can make cousin discovery convenient. FamilySearch’s shared profile and change history can reveal other contributors working on the same person.
Collaboration
FamilySearch is strongest when researchers accept a shared, sourced profile and use reason statements and discussion. It is weaker for a group that needs exclusive control over every deceased-person edit.
Ancestry suits a project owner who wants an invited team around a specific tree. Collaborators still need clear rules for sources, merges, living people, and media rights.
DNA
Ancestry operates a consumer DNA matching ecosystem tied to trees and subscriptions or current feature access. FamilySearch does not function as the equivalent consumer DNA testing database. Researchers can still document DNA-supported conclusions in their private research, but should protect living matches and never upload raw data casually.
If DNA is central, review current testing availability, match tools, subscription requirements, download options, consent, deletion, and law in your country.
Images and source capture
On either platform, save a full citation and permitted local copy. Record provider, collection, record reference, image or page, URL, and access date. A source attached to an online tree is not a complete preservation plan.
FamilySearch image access can depend on custodian agreements. Ancestry access to subscriber records may change when a membership ends, though tree data remains under account rules. Keep independent backups and readable reports.
Data portability
GEDCOM can transfer core people and relationships, but not every platform feature, record image, hint, message, or reason statement. Export trees periodically where supported, download media separately, and audit imports into a clean database.
FamilySearch notes that its unique reason statements and some information do not fit the most widely used GEDCOM workflows. Treat shared Family Tree and a private master database as different systems rather than expecting a perfect two-way file copy.
Which should you use?
Use FamilySearch first when budget is zero, when its catalogue covers the relevant place, when centre access is practical, or when you want to improve a shared ancestor profile.
Use Ancestry first when a specific licensed collection is available there, you want an owner-controlled tree, its DNA matches are central, or a paid membership saves substantial archive time.
Use both when each has distinct collections. Search and cite the underlying record independently instead of attaching duplicates without analysis.
A fair 30-minute comparison
Pick one known ancestor and one unresolved question. On each site, search the catalogue, run the same name and place variants, open two original images, inspect a hint, create or view the person, record a citation, and locate export/privacy guidance. Compare relevant evidence found—not the number of flashy hints.
The better service is the one that contains the right records and supports a workflow you can keep sourced, private, backed up, and understandable.
